Stirling Advent Giving Project
Friends helping friends - supporting Turkish newcomers
For the week of December 16-23, check out how our Turkish Muslim friends are helping newcomers with employment. See also the previous focus on help with housing.
We at Stirling have a friendship with the Turkish Muslim community, dating back to about 2010. We have had shared conversation, visited each other’s faith communities, learned about each other’s traditions (including Iftar, Noah’s pudding, and Christmas) eaten together and supported each other. This year’s Advent Giving project “Friends helping friends” will go to their Anatolian Cultural Centre where they worship and gather here in Kitchener and where they have welcomed 80 Turkish Newcomer families since the summer of 2016.
Following a failed coup attempt in Turkey, and a subsequent crackdown in which 55,000 citizens were jailed (including family members of our friends), many people have had to flee the country.
We want to support our friends as they do the important work of offering hospitality and welcome to these people new to our community and so we welcome you to donate to “Friends helping friends.” Each Sunday of Advent we will receive a special offering to support the work of this small community of faith as they welcome newcomers – with housing, furnishing, employment assistance, language classes, friendship and loving support. Donations can be made by cash, cheque (made payable to Stirling designated for “Advent giving,”) or online at canadahelps.org (with “Advent giving” in the message box).
